What better color for a rare Dodge truck than bright red? The Major's '36 Humpback Panel is one of fewer than 150 built that year. After 10 years of rebuilding, Jim and Barbara Major have an outstanding early street truck that is a show winner as well as a super cruiser.

From any angle, this early Dodge looks really sweet. It sits low but has good ground clearance for a truck that is driven all the time and sits on a rake. The larger rear body may look like someone grafted a 3/4-ton rear section to a smaller 1/2-ton front portion, but that's the way Dodge designed it. The model is rare and very few exist today. The Majors did a great job of bringing the panel back to life.

The humpback panel model is certainly different than how we think an early panel truck should look. The rarity of this model is what drew the Majors to it. The bright color and altered stance give it a very appealing modern look. That big and little wheel and tire combination also helps.

This design is more than a little different and was meant to give the working truck more headroom in the cargo area. But it's obvious (by the rarity of this model) that the design did not take off. But the design does make for a cool classic truck today.

The truck was in very poor condition when the Majors started the project, but they felt lucky that nearly all of the trim pieces were still intact. Most items required a lot of restoration work, but that is easier than trying to find parts for a rare '36 Dodge.

At first glance, you don't notice all of the small trim items used by Dodge on this work truck. The thin trim molding really sets this truck off from the norm and had to be one of the reasons it took so long to restore. The thin outside pieces of the group continue onto the grille shell and finish off by wrapping around the headlight mount.

The rear portion of the frame has been narrowed Pro Street-style to accept the Morrison ladder bars and narrowed 9-inch Ford rearend fitted with disc brakes. Back here, the Weld wheels measure 15x12 inches and are fitted with 29x18.50R15 M/T Sportsman fatties. A 13-gallon Mustang gas tank is tucked under the rear floor.

Hats off to Jim! He kept the powerplant all Mopar, using a '72 Dodge 340 motor that he had rebuilt to stock. He also selected an Offenhauser tunnel ram and a pair of Carter 500 carbs. A rebuilt Chrysler 727 transmission was also used.

The dash has been cleaned off for a nice overall pattern, with the gauge panel moved to the center. A tilt column and an aluminum banjo steering wheel were installed.

The rear cargo area has been changed more than any other part of the body. Big tubs were worked into the oak flooring and wall covering that once were just plain paint, since these were built to be work vehicles in 1936. All of the woodwork was done by Barbara.

This is the only area that originally had any wood. The inside of the body was not covered, but the wood strips attached to the red vertical metal strips were for fastening cargo to the side racks. The truck still had worn wooden pieces in this area when the vehicle was hauled home.
