All this year, Truckin' has been celebrating its 30th anniversary with nostalgic features and retrospects, and has been turning back the clock to another time and generation. Some of our readers have been with us since the beginning, while others have come on board only in the last year or so. Thirty years is definitely a chunk of history, and if you're past the three-decade mark in your life, do you remember what you were doing in 1974?
I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the present Truckin' staff to see what they were doing and what they looked like 30 years ago. Of course, a few of our editors were not even born yet, so in those cases we've asked their dads to fill in the blanks. The photos on this page show how each editor or their dad looked in 1974 - and we've included a gleam in each father's eye to show the small spark of life for those unborn editors.
As for myself, I was a much younger 25-year-old with longer hair and had just finished junior college, earning a degree in photography. A couple of years later, I would be sending my first resum off to Truckin' magazine (I actually didn't come to the magazine until I was 51, in the year 2000). Editorial Director/Editor Steve Warner was a mere strapping 4-year-old lad, growing up in his hometown of Glendale, California. Steve doesn't remember much about those early years, but who does?
Senior Tech Editor Bob Ryder had just gotten married in 1974 and is shown here with his beautiful bride Cathey leaving the altar. Bob was 22 back then and living in Huntington Beach, California. As you can tell from Bob's burly physique, he played some football in those days. Staff Editor Mark Halvorsen was an up-and-coming 8-year-old living in Kendall, Florida, attending the second grade. He remembers actually liking disco music (glad you grew up, Mark).
Feature Editor Travis Noack and Associate Editors Sean P. Holman and Dan Ward were not born yet and, as we say, were just a gleam in their fathers' eyes. Travis' dad Warren was living in Torrance, California, at the time and ran his own travel business. Sean's father, Bill Holman, was a social ecology major at the University of California, Irvine, and living in Huntington Beach. Lastly, Dan's dad, Phil Ward, was serving a stint in the Marine Corps in Parris Island, South Carolina. Phil had just gotten married to Dan's mom, Sue, in 1974, as shown in the wedding picture here.
There you have it, the Truckin' staff 30 years ago. Who would have known?
