Competition brings out the best and worst in us sometimes. The need to one-up the guy in the lane next to us at a stoplight, dragstrip, or even the grocery store line can be a real bummer when things go badly. Especially if the guy gets his groceries bagged up before you've even paid yet. At our inaugural THROWDOWN at Holley's LS Fest last September, Jason Stephenson pushed his '03 Silverado SS hard all weekend long and was in the running to take home the 20-pound billet winner's trophy. That is until he turned up the wick on his nitrous a little too much. Setting the low elapsed time and highest trap speed, at 11.87 @ 114.42 mph, Jason wanted to be sure the other racers weren't going to get close to his time, and after a slight tweak, the nitrous sprayed for the final time. A backfire caused an explosion big enough to melt down a spark plug and meld some of it to the top of the piston. His day was done, but his attitude was still positive. "I'll be back next year with a faster combination," he tells us. Should be exciting to see his AWD truck blasting into the low 11s.
