Blessings and Beatings

When I began my career at Truckin in February of 2003, GM had just launched a refresh of the GMT-800 truck line with the “cat eye” Chevy frontends and slicker GMC front styling. Also new for 2003 was the Silverado SS model with AWD, a high-output 6.0L, and intimidating looks. One of my first road test memories was pitting the new Silverado SS versus the supercharged SVT Lightning -- ah, the good ol’ days. In the fall of 2006 I was the Senior Editor and GM put the fullsize truck world on notice with the release of its GMT-900 platform trucks. With rounder edges, bold frontends, and a completely redesigned interior, the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado took Truck of the Year honors. Fast-forward to 2013, the GMT-900 was looking long in the tooth, but GM was ready to unveil its all-new, though similarly styled, 2014 fullsize truck offerings. Working at the magazine for three generations of GM trucks, I feel a certain connection because as I advanced my career, the GM trucks kept improving to be more competitive. After looking back on my logbooks to compare the 2007-2013 GM trucks to the new 2014 line, there was a long list of things they got right with the new truck, but also several things they didn’t.
