Minnesota Street Rod Association - Back To The Fifties Weekend

MSRA Takes Us Back In Time

As the plane became airborne, I was off to cover another custom truck and car show. This time, the assignment would take me to Minnesota-America's Northwoods, the land of 10,000 lakes, and the home of lumberjack Paul Bunyan. The place where the hands of time will be turned back as the MSRA's (Minnesota Street Rod Association) 31st annual Back To The Fifties weekend, featuring pre-'64 trucks and cars, hit the 312-acre Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

The Hampton Inn Shoreview hosted the massive event, which attracted 10,553 customs, rods, musclecars, and trucks in 2003. Enthusiasts swarmed the Minneapolis, St. Paul area like mosquitoes drawn to a bug zapper. More than 300 vendors displayed their latest wares; crafters exhibited their unique cottage goods; and more than 350 swappers were ready to bargain for those most-have, hard-to-find treasures. From sunup 'till sundown, every ride cruised along the fairground's cruise route. Thousands of spectators admired the wild to mild custom rolling stock, while others strolled the grounds eyeballing the static customs representing some 17 states. More than 700 bidders took part in the Mecum Hot Rod Auction, which displayed more than 150 vehicles. The sounds of rock 'n' roll tunes from Robby Vee and His V-3 Rock-Its, Rockin' Hollywoods, The Fantastic Convertibles, Power Play, and The Memories filled the fairgrounds with a '50s feel. The kids also had their own Tractor Pull contest and play area where the parents could let them enjoy themselves.

Every square foot of the enormous fairgrounds was covered with a rainbow of colorful early model domestic iron. Every custom ride was of the highest quality, but one thing we did pick up on was the absence of 22- to 24-inch spools. Most rides were still rolling on 18s. It must be part of the northern time warp.

If there is one show that needs to be marked on your calendar of upcoming shows, the Back To The Fifties weekend is a must. It was definitely a great time. Check it out.
