One of the most prestigious shows of the year was the 11th Annual Goodguys Rod & Custom gathering held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, in Del Mar, California. Del Mar is nestled up against the sandy beaches of the blue Pacific. Del Mar’s picturesque fairgrounds feature breathtaking colorful gardens, well manicured landscaping, and Spanish Mission-style architecture. The Goodguys Del Mar three-day extravaganza treated thousands of spectators and participants to an incredible gathering of more than 2,000 custom cars and trucks thru ’72. Hundreds of mild to wild custom trucks were on display for all to admire.
Show participants enjoyed the designated roll ’n show route that allowed cruising throughout the fairgrounds from sunup to sundown. Spacious O’Brien Exhibit Hall showcased the Goodguys indoor customs, rods, and truck segment of the show. The Goodguys Street Challenge Autocross event was very popular with showgoers and participants. This year’s coned event attracted a total of 57 entrants, with six trucks going against the clock. Rob MacGregor negotiated his specially built ’55 Ford F-100 through the tight course in 34.144 seconds to capture the truck class trophy. An overflow of aftermarket manufactures displayed their latest performance goodies in the Vendor’s Village. Treasure hunters were busy scouring the swap meet for those hard to find original vintage parts. A For Sale corral allowed those interested to haggle price and swap cash for pink slips. Large crowds attended the informative seminars that featured well-known custom designers and builders. Revelle models hosted a “Make ’n Take,” where kids and their parents spent quality time constructing plastic model kits. PPG broke out the crayons and PPG coloring books for junior hot rodders to create their own colorful paint schemes.
As the sun was setting in the Pacific on Sunday afternoon the prestigious Gooodguys show awards were given out the winners in their classes.
