By the time you read this, the show season will almost be finished, and there will have been some really great shows that have taken place. If you checked many of the show schedules, both on the Web or in the automotive magazines on the newsstands, you could find a show to go to just about every weekend during the summer months. While checking these schedules, we ran across one show that was to be held at Atlanta Beach in Jonesboro, Georgia. We decided to check out this show and see what kind of beach this was. So, we sent an E-mail to the guys with Xtreme Lowz car and truck club, the hosts of the show, to let them know that we would be coming. A few days later, Howard, the president of Xtreme Lowz, gave us a call to say they would be looking forward to seeing us.
A few weeks later, armed with direction, we found exit 228 off I-75 south and started following the signs to the show. Much to our surprise, we found out that Atlanta Beach was part of Clayton County International Park. Clayton County International Park is a large park with a lake on one side with lots of picnic areas. The beach was located on the back side of the park surrounded by two large parking lots. It looked like a big water park covered in about 2 feet of sand. The only bad part was that all the water has been drained out so the area could be cleaned for the beginning of the season. Xtreme Lowz had set up their show in the big parking lot on the back side of the beach, and there was plenty of room to spread out and park lots of vehicles. The show was a little down in numbers from last year, but by the time registration closed Saturday afternoon, there were more than 300 vehicles covering the show site.
There were lots of trucks ranging from import and domestic minis, fullsize, and even a few 4x4s, and the quality was outstanding. Also on hand were a number of vendors selling a wide variety of products from steering wheels to taillights. Drop Em wear? was on hand selling its great line of truck wearing apparel. Also present was a DJ playing lots of the latest tracks and entertaining the crowd. On the upper side of the big parking lots, an SPL audio competition was taking place with categories for both outlaw and legal competition. Judging was a tough job with so many outstanding vehicles on hand. With 75 classes and a First, Second, and Third Place in each category, not many participants went home without a trophy.
On Sunday, things picked up slowly as the morning wore on with more vehicles showing up for the final day. Finally, at about 2 p.m., the participants started gathering at the covered picnic area for trophy presentations. Besides the class winners, there were 15 specialty awards, plus the Best of Show car and truck receiving $500 and a trophy for their efforts. For club participation, there was $500 for the best club and $500 for the club with the most members in attendance.
The show was a great success and the Extreme Lowz guys and gals did a great job putting it on. Howard and the club members are going to lots of shows the rest of the year to get ideas to make next year's show bigger and better.
