The Goodguys Rod & Custom traveling shows are one of the most popular rodding shows making stops across the country. One of the final stops on the southern swing is at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina, in October. This show grows in size and reputation every year.
The weather for the show was the best it has ever been. The sun shined every day, and the temperature was in the 80s. Things got underway on a Thursday, and ran nonstop until the last award was handed out on Sunday afternoon. Even though this is a regional event, cars and trucks came from all around the country to be part of this great event. Besides all the great cars and trucks, the garage area was covered end to end, front to back, with a lot of great vendors selling everything automotive related and non-automotive you could imagine. Goodguys even had a booth filled with the company's stuff.
Thursday and Friday's activities included tours of some of the Winston Cup shops close to the speedway, and for a fee, you could take three laps around the 1-1/2-mile speedway at close to racing speed with one of the Richard Petty driving school instructors.
During the four-day event, more than 25,000 spectators came through the gate to check out all the great rides. More than 3,000 cars and trucks took part in the infield show 'n' shine. Some of the top vehicles were selected and parked out on the pit road. Finally, late Saturday afternoon, as the sun started to set in the west, all the participants lined up on the road course to drive three laps in their rides around the track. This is one activity that everyone had looked forward to all weekend.
As Sunday morning rolled around, many of the participants were loading up and heading for home, while those who were notified on Saturday that they would be receiving an award, gave their rides one more cleaning. About 1 p.m., the award winners lined up to parade across the stage and receive their plaques.
This was a great event for the whole family to enjoy, and the Goodguys folks, along with the staff at Lowes Motor Speedway did a great job putting it on. Goodguys already has plans to return to Lowes Motor Speedway on October 29-31, 2004.
