When the members of the Pebble Pushers sat down at the end of '03 to plan their 2004 show, they knew it wouldn't take much to make it a knock out. They held the show the same place as all the years before, at the Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, North Carolina, just north of Charlotte. Since this is their seventh year doing this, they pretty much had it down. The show has gained country-wide interest, so bringing out the big dogs this year wasn't a problem. Everywhere you looked online to find information for car shows, Scrapefest always seemed to be on top of all the lists. This show grows every year, and with almost 500 entries and more spectators than they could count, this year was no exception. One thing about this show that stands out is the fact that not only does the quantity of rides grow, but the quality seems to get better every year.
The Pushers also throw one of the biggest and best dragging contest around. Once night falls, people start lining up on either side of the "drag strip" to make sure they get a good view of the sparks that are guaranteed to fly. This year there were more than 40 entries in the dragging contest. Winners receive a trophy engraved with "Hell yeah, I drag my truck" and a set of titanium blocks. They also hold a burn-out contest known for destroying more than a truck bed of tires.
When it came time to hand out the awards Sunday afternoon, winners were handed some unique hardware. The Best in Show awards were neon wall clocks that had the club logo and Best in Show printed on it. The one set of awards that really stood out and made this show unique was the unfinished trophies. Since these trophies are going to "unfinished" rides, it's suiting that the trophies be unfinished themselves. The colored bars of the trophies were primered and the trophies were taken apart and put in a box, so just like the ride they were given out for, they still need to be put together.
Before this year's show took place, the Pebble Pushers had already started making plans for their '05 show. It's going to be back at the same location for the eighth time and will once again be the last weekend in September. Expect this show to be one of the biggest on the East Coast, and make sure that if you hit only one show next year, that Scrapefest is the one you make it to.
