Few experiences in life compare to screaming across the glassy surface of a favorite lake or river: With the wind blowing into the eyes and the go-pedal planted, tears begin to flow as speeds in the triple digits send adrenaline levels into the red zone. Nothing beats the sound of a blown big-block singing an authoritative rumble while using over-the-transom headers as its microphone. It's one thing to crack the throttle all the way open from time to time on the river, but it's quite another to stay in it for a quarter mile at a time through changing water conditions. Drag Boat Racing is a sport that puts both boat and driver through the paces, and the issues of safety and proper tuning and preparation are paramount to success. Recently we packed up our cameras and headed to the NJBA (National Jet Boat Association) Spring Madness event held April 16-17 at Lake Ming in Bakersfield, California. In an attempt to expand the popular Water Toys section of Truckin' into a broader sampling of aquatic performance, we decided that some full-throttle drag boat coverage was a must. Strolling the pits, we got a close-up view of intense wrenching between racing rounds, and while camping out at the starting line, our cameras were ready to capture all of the triple-digit, water-punishing action. Blown flatbottom V-drives shredded the water with a vengeance, while wild jet boats flew down the quarter mile with nothing but air under their hulls. Check out the coverage for a look at all the high-speed liquid action, and for more information on the NJBA and their racing events, go to www.njbaracing.net.
