A great deal of factors play into a successful drag boat racing program, and the National Jet Boat Association (NJBA) has it down pat. A good crew and constant preparation help drivers stay focused on the water ahead and on what they have to do to run hard on every pass. On the weekend of May 21, Truckin' got a driver-seat view of the world of drag-boat racing at the NJBA May Shootout Drag Boat Races held at Lake Ming in Bakersfield, California. Hundreds of high-performance drag-boat drivers came from various areas to put their skills and boats to the test down the liquid quarter mile. Triple-digit racing was the main feature of the day while vendors were on hand selling T-shirts and various appetite options. Crowds stood on the shoreline in amazement as drivers launched their boats off the start and held the courage pedal all the way down the track. The sound of the roaring power plants and water-shredding action put our enthusiasm on overload. For more information on the NJBA or the racing events, go to www.njbaracing.net.
