Martay Jenkins poses with his H2 on our desert photo spot near the Firebird International

Martay Jenkins is used to following his dreams. After playing football for Nebraska-Omaha and graduating to the Denver Broncos in 1999, Martay is making a run for the Arizona Rattlers arena football team. It's been a rough-and-tumble vision quest of tackles and turf that has driven Martay from his native Iowa to the desert Wild West. Football fantasies aren't the only things to have taken root in Phoenix's harsh climate. Martay teamed with Goins Automotive Group (otherwise known as GAME) in Tempe, Arizona, to build an automotive avatar of his other lifelong passion: custom automobiles. GAME, a custom shop owned by Ken Goins, handled every upgrade on Martay's '03 H2. Ken's one-stop-shop approach is ambitious, since it can be difficult to recruit the diverse expertise needed to execute all aspects of a custom job. Based on what we can see from this particular project, however, Ken appears to have assembled a solid team.

This is no over-the-top install that screams "Hey, look at me" at passersby. We noticed the Hummer at its debut at Truckin's Phoenix Nationals last fall only after driving by a couple times in our golf cart. Once we took a closer look, the quality of the work was apparent. This H2's clean, friendly, and well-executed demeanor appears to reflect the personality of its owner and the skills of the players at GAME. Not that we were the only people to notice this H2's merits: It placed second for Best of Show at the Phoenix Nationals--not a touchdown, but certainly a game well played, and one that we certainly enjoyed watching.

Here's a closeup of the linebackers in the Hummer's audio and video entertainment system. Nothing here is totally stock, and by stock we mean that even the aftermarket equipment was tweaked to fit this H2's game plan. One Kicker SX700.4 amp delivers 175Wx4 to the speakers in the Hummer's doors. Meanwhile, two SX1250.1 Class D amps pump 1,250Wx1 into the four Kicker Solo-Baric S15L7 subwoofers. That's a lot of power for those subs. But no worries, these woofers can handle 1,000W rms. Green was the predominant color for this playing field, so GAME painted the outer rings of the subs olive green and illuminated the inside of the plexi-faced subwoofer enclosure with green neon. The color scheme was carried through with the fiberglass fabrication and two-toned vinyl outside the enclosure, as well. Monster Cable wired the entire system.

Heading up the entire system is an Eclipse CD8052 AM/FM/CD player installed in the center console. Dangling above it from the ceiling is a duo of 7-inch Clarion monitors where the rearview mirror used to be. These screens give a view of the goings on behind the vehicle as seen by a rearview camera. VizuaLogic headrest monitors gleam video entertainment from the slot-loaded DVD monitor from the same maker. Beneath the head unit are three switches set in green vinyl. These switches control the neon lighting in the H2.

GAME ladled chrome and shiny, happy stainless onto this Hummer in the form of a push bar, grille, roof rack, hood vent, door handles, fenderwells, and trim for the brake lights. And, if that wasn't enough to illuminate the Hummer's environs with reflected ambient starlight, the HID headlamps will certainly light the way. Beneath that steel-laden hood lie a couple of easy engine uplifts, such as a K&N air intake and an exhaust system tipped with a B&B pipe. GAME pulled the stock battery and dropped two Optima Yellow Top batteries beneath the rear seats.
