Rob Clason is a journeyman of types; he's built up his '95 GMC Sierra numerous times. Now, nine years after taking ownership, the final product can be heard before it can be seen thanks to six JL Audio 12-inch subs and a total of four JL amps. Instead of drifting from shop to shop for the newest improvement, the truck now checks out shows-where it always garners attention.
Unlike the typical truck project that focuses around the paint or engine, this truck was built with the sole purpose to entertain with the latest and greatest audio gear available. As owner of Audio Midwest in Stillwater, Oklahoma, Rob is no stranger to high-end audio installs and hardware. When it came time to finish his own driver, he recruited two of America's top installers: Jason Carson and Jefferson Bryant. With these two guys shaping, building, sanding, and wiring, the project was destined for success. Don Milner chipped in with his talents, and after dialing in the system, the bed was transformed into an audio wonderland. Housed in a crazy fiberglass box in the bed lie six JL Audio 12-inch subs powered by two JL Audio 1000-watt mono amps. With a pass-through air chamber cut into the bed and back wall, the low frequencies can easily be heard in the cab. Powering the sixteen highs sprinkled throughout the cabin are two JL Audio 300-watt four-channel amps all wired by Audio Midwest. Providing the signals is a Kenwood KDC-910 DVD-player with 5.1 surround sound. Sitting in the standard cab truck is like riding a musical mechanical bull. Other interior goodies include a slick center console housing a Stinger capacitor, APC racing seats, and custom-upholstered door panels from Kyle Ambrose Upholstery. Necvox monitors can be found in the fiberglassed bed and door panels with JL Audio 5-inch XR components replacing the side mirrors for even more volume.
Content with the ear-bleeding system, the guys switched gears and finished the truck's overall look. Dropped with 2-inch Belltech spindles, Chassis Tech 3-inch monoleaves, and some Firestone 'bags, the Sierra cruises nice and low. The 'bags are connected to the Viper 560 alarm and will actually deflate if someone attempts to steal the truck. Under each fender, Michelin rubber wraps 20x8-inch Weld Spiker wheels
On the outside, Hi-Way Dreams in Enid, Oklahoma, provided the talent for the bodywork and paint. After shaving the door and tailgate handles, the '95 Chevy Silverado front grille was added, and the entire truck painted Lexus black and DuPont Victory Red, with silver tribal flames separating the colors.
Under the hood rests an '86 IROC 350ci V-8 equipped with a Crane camshaft, Hedman headers, and backed by a 700-R4 tranny. Covering the entire engine bay is a paint-matched cover showing the detail of the rusted rivet airbrushing and music note graphics
One talented crew, a well-equipped audio shop, and a determined owner possessed by a relentless drive for perfection: The elements that created this killer audio competitor and ended the need for another build. Drifting is now something fun to do while collecting deserved trophies.
