Digging for treasure in Texas has been a high yielding excursion for us over the last few years, and the abundance of precious metal is everywhere in sight. Coy Balusek's glistening '90 GMC Sierra is just one of the rich discoveries we dug up last summer while in attendance at Texas Showdown, in Houston, and ever since then, it's been burning a hole in our feature file cabinet.
When Coy first purchased this truck, it was just something he planned on stashing for a while until he was finished with another ongoing project at the time. When the moment came to finally tear into it, he had Rocky at Chaotic Rods and Customs, in Conroe, Texas, execute a stock-floor body drop that would help introduce the GMC's body to the searing asphalt. Slam Specialties RE7 'bags and an engine-driven York air compressor do their part in sinking the 22x8.5-inch Centerline Archer IIs and Nitto 265/35R22 tires deep into the custom fenderwells. So far, Coy's side project was quickly taking center stage and evolving into a multifaceted gem of a ride.
With the Sierra's suspension well taken care of, Coy once again employed the skills of the Chaotic crew as well as Big of DBC to shave the door handles, steps, and create a set of smoothed fender skirts. A Grant Kustoms steel roll pan was put into position and the rear fenders were sectioned to make enough room for the intruding rolling stock. Mark, of Mark of Excellence Auto Body and Paint, in San Antonio, then sprayed a top secret golden hue atop the manicured metal that Coy would like to keep under wraps. We don't know if he knows, but we're actually on to his 'secret' color selection though. To respect his wishes, however, we will not be disclosing any hints or clues, but if you would still like to take an educated guess, we won't let a correct response go unrewarded.
The GMC's interior has been lavished with just as much style as its clean exterior. The entire dash was yanked and painted, as were the door panels, which have also been covered with black leather and suede. The bench seat was also treated to the lush life as it was completely recovered as well. Marco Auto Interiors, in Hugo, conducted the stitch work, and once they were finished, Coy wired up a full audio system complete with an Alpine head unit, two MTX amps, three MTX 10-inch subs behind the seats, and Pioneer separates.
What first started out as a misguided impulse buy, quickly appreciated into a mint condition, rolling chunk of golden eye candy. Coy would like to express his appreciation to those who dedicated their time and effort into the build, say thanks to his Aftermath family, and dedicate the completion of his most cherished project to the loving memory of his dad and sister.
