The first question that came into mind when we caught our first glimpse of Kelyn Garcia's slammed '63 Mercury M-100 was, "Where the heck did you get that thing?" After a few minutes spent shooting the breeze at Danger Zone a few months back, he informed us that he found it listed for sale in Canada for a measly $2,500. The cost of having it delivered to his home in Sylmar, California, spiked his initial investment a bit, but it was well worth every dollar to take ownership of a unique project truck.
In order to rest the Mercury's metal on the pavement, Kelyn had IF Customs, also in Sylmar, fabricate a 2x4-inch boxed-steel frame, a custom two-link, and even had them cook up a custom set of A-arms that would willingly mate with Western Chassis drop spindles and ContiTech 'bags. Wheelsmith 18x8-inch front and 18x10-inch rear rollers were then sunk into Diamond Back classic radials for an unmatched, throwback appearance.
Aside from the IF Customs-executed one-inch body drop, the Merc's shell has been left in its factory glory. The wood floor and bedrails were both one-off creations that Kelyn and his father tackled together. Inside the cab resides an aluminum, bomber-style bench seat complete with cup holders and Mexican blanket wrapped pads-all specialty items produced by Jamey Jordan of HandMade Seat Co. The original 292ci, V-8 has been given a second chance thanks to Eddings Engine Rebuilding Inc., in San Fernando, California.
The M-100 has come a long way in the three years that it's belonged to Kelyn, and from what he's told us, there is still more progress to be made. Additional bodywork is priority number one, and once everything's nice and straight, a few coats of flat steel blue, and metallic copper for the roof will be applied to the Merc's skin. The truck will be polished up a bit, but it will still retain a rough-around-the-edges attitude that will be impossible to ignore on the Cali streets.
Kelyn would like to thank his parents, Jose and Celina, brothers Fabian, Adan, Hans, Noe and Francis, his fiance Selene, friends Edgar, Daniel, and Shady for their support, Phil, Rudy, and Barny of Borrachos Clothing, Cary and Chris at IF Custom, Jamey Jordan of Handmade Seat Co., Chris at Wheelsmith, and his entire NC family.
