Tyler Hulsey, of Dinuba, California, definitely stands out in the crowd when he pulls up to shows driving his body-dropped 1987 C10. Being only 18 years old, Tyler is an up-and-comer in the scene. Even though he has been involved in the custom truck world since he was eight years old, this ’87 is his very first project, and Tyler wants to do it right. He has been building it for three years now and it’s about halfway done, but he already has something that he can show off and be proud of.

Tyler started the build by cutting the rear frame and welding a C-notch into it. He then Z’d the front end to let his truck sit low all around. Next on the agenda was to bring the truck down even more by body-dropping it 4 inches. He also bolted on a set of Western Chassis 2¾-inch drop spindles and KP Components control arms. To slam it, he added Slam Specialties RE-7 ‘bags with ½-inch air line and valves. Out back, Tyler and his buddies bolted on a KP Components four-link, matching RE-7 ’bags, and a Choppin’ Block 20-gallon fuel cell. For rolling stock, Tyler currently has a set of 22-inch Intro Speedstar wheels wrapped in Dunlop tires, but eventually he will bolt on the Raceline Deceptives that are on the rendering.

Under the hood, the worn-out 305ci V-8 will soon be replaced by a rebuilt 350ci engine dressed up with a serpentine belt kit, billet valve covers, and other eye-catching accessories. He wants something that will get him where he is going and look good doing it.

Tyler’s square-body has received several body mods as well, including the tailgate and handle being shaved, as are the moldings and driprails. In the future, Tyler plans to shave the door handles and swap out the front end for an ’89 Suburban front clip. Tyler has also brought the bumpers closer into the body to eliminate the ugly gap that came from the factory. He pulled the same move with the cab to minimize the gap between the cab and bed. A sheetmetal bed was built and custom front and rear bedrails were made to match the side rails. With Tyler working at a paint and body shop, it shouldn’t be too much longer before several coats of silver paint will be sprayed followed by a gunmetal graphic outlined in lime green pinstriping.

Still to go is a full interior, which will include a leather-wrapped dash, leather-wrapped door panels, and the bench seat will be wrapped in leather and black suede and get some pinstriped stitching to match the paint. A half-wrapped steering wheel will be installed, and the headliner will be wrapped in suede. For an audio system, Tyler is going with a Pioneer flip-up head unit, components, 6x9s, and two 10-inch subs.
