Galpin Auto Sports (GAS) made a name for itself by offering custom vehicles right on the showroom floor, and this 2011 Explorer that debuted at the 2010 SEMA show continues in that tradition. With several subtle modifications that allow the Explorer to nearly blend in with the crowd, onlookers will do a double take when they realize that this is no run-of-the-mill SUV.

The exterior of the ’11 Explorer is already far sleeker than its predecessors, but GAS took Ford’s styling as a jumping off point and fabricated new front and rear bumper covers for a more upscale and sporty look. A set of custom vents were grafted into the formerly sedate hood to add some attitude, and the turn signals, driving lights, and courtesy lights in the mirrors were all upgraded with LED units while new HID foglamps fill the lower valence.

The most striking modification is the lowered suspension and 24x10-inch Forgiato Otto three-piece wheels. The tires are 285/30R24 Nitto NT420s and complement the sporty nature of the lowered suspension that the guys at GAS cooked up with H&R springs on each corner. As you can see from the driving shot, the voids in the eight-spoke Forgiatos allow for a nice view of the custom Wilwood brake package. Six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear make up for the added mass of the wheel and tire upgrade and look as good as they perform.

Moving to the interior, the crew at GAS removed the factory woodgrain trim and replaced it with silver carbon-fiber before upgrading the audio with JL components, amps, and a subwoofer. New diamond tuck upholstery and a leather and suede headliner complete the upgrades and give the interior a stylish, classic look, which is a great place to sit and enjoy the ride as well as the tunes.

The final touch was a complete repaint using PPG Lightning Silver with accents in a slightly darker shade, Tungsten. The look is pure luxury and caps off the subtle modifications that result in an SUV that looks like a concept without going over the top.
