5. Manufactured at GM's Engine Assembly Plant in Tonawanda, New York, the new EcoTec3 engine blocks arrive in roughcast and then get machined to within amazingly-tight tolerances and assembled. Thirty-one-year GM vet Jordan Lee, Chief Engineer and Program Manager for Small-Block Engines, gave us an inside scoop on the new engine's vast technologies. “There are three unique technologies, Active Fuel Management, also known as cylinder deactivation, where we actually disable four cylinders on a V-8 engine. We also have a new fuel injection system known as Direct Injection where we directly inject fuel into the combustion chamber, and the third technology is Variable Cam Timing and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). These work together very synergistically to create an engine that delivers exceptional power and torque, while at the same time improving fuel economy."
