Growing up in the Soviet-paranoid 1980s, we still find the 1984 movie Red Dawn funny and entertaining. The gist is local Colorado high school students trying to fend off a paratroop attack against trained Soviet troops looking to take over America. Of course, the “Wolverines,” as they called themselves, managed to outsmart and defeat the Soviets, but despite the happy ending, the film won’t go down in history as a multiple Oscar winner. What may go down in custom truck history, is Golden, Colorado’s own Five R Trucks’ most recent build, this 2014 GMC Sierra. Built in only seven weeks by Five R owners Jake and TJ, the Sierra is proof that once the people of this great nation work together, impressive results can happen.

Five R Trucks has built several show-winning and magazine-worthy trucks in years past, but once the 2014 GM trucks were announced for delivery last September, the team scrambled to get one into the shop and start making it their own. Starting with a Crew Cab 1500, the accomplished builders bolted on a suspension capable of handling the rugged Colorado terrain. Gone are the factory struts and control arms, and in their place now reside performance units from Icon Vehicle Dynamics. The goal wasn’t to lift the Sierra too much, rather to make room for 35-inch mud tires. To accomplish this, the body men at Lawson’s Paint & Body, also in Golden, got to work stretching the front fenders 2½ inches up front and a full 3 inches for the bedsides. The extra sheetmetal does provide the much-needed clearance for the 35-inch Toyo M/T tires and 18-inch Method Racing wheels. A trick dual tire carrier from Addictive Desert Designs (ADD) was installed in the bed and powdercoated to match the planned bright red paint scheme.

Red and black is a classic color combo, but the Five R guys changed it up a little with a bright red basecoat and satin black ...

A key to any getaway truck is having the power to outrun anything and anyone chasing you. It didn’t take long for the Five R guys to order up a Magnuson supercharger for the 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8. With a custom tune and an MBRP exhaust in place, the Sierra laid down 416 rwhp and 444 lb-ft of torque. That much power makes launching over Colorado’s harshest mountain roads and off-road paths a simple press of the throttle. For added show points, many underhood plastic pieces were hydrodipped in red urban camo.

We mentioned the sectioned and stretched fenders earlier, but there are much more than just those strategic mods under all that bright red Sikkens paint. Illuminating the trail ahead, a 54-inch Rigid radius lightbar has no problem giving Jake and TJ plenty of obstacle notice. And if that’s not enough, the addition of the Rigid grille and ADD bumper account for five more high-output LED lightbars (one of which is hidden behind the front skidplate). That ADD front bumper also received red-powdercoated aluminum inserts and a winch with a Monster Hook attachment. Five R also blew apart the headlights, had them painted, and added HID bulbs and LED accent strips for a truly unique look. Out back, a matching ADD Stealth bumper was installed and a Monster Hook slipped into the factory hitch to make recovering any fallen Wolverines that much easier.

Inside, two-tone red and black leather seat covers continue the red and black theme, while matching urban camo hydrodipping was applied to several interior plastic panels. The pillars and headliner were wrapped in suede, and the factory 8-inch stereo wasn’t touched.

Running larger tires with a smaller lift gives the Sierra a tough, Bulldog-like stance that screams “ready to run.” According to the Five R guys, the GMC Sierra does just that -- and they enjoy putting the truck through its paces every chance they get. If the skies do fill up with Soviet paratroopers, we know one truck that’s up to the challenge.
