No matter where your comfort level is when it comes to practicing certain skills, it can always be traced back to a starting point -- a place and time when hopes were high and experience was low. Matt Lawrence is an established paint and body guy and, even with having a number of well-received customs already on his resume, he is well aware of his humble beginning. Actually, it’d be nearly impossible to forget.

The Chevrolet S-10 seen here is a project Matt started 11 years ago. He picked it up when he was 16 and -- as expected of a teenage dude with big ideas and little money -- he customized whenever his wallet allowed. First came a set of wheels, then a drop kit, and a roll pan soon followed. From there, it’s all kind of a blur. “The truck has had so many looks over the years,” says Matt. “In 2004, I hit a deer, which led to me having an excuse to shave everything. After a wreck in 2010, I figured the downtime would be a good opportunity to swap in a new motor, build a sheetmetal bed, and spray a new coat of paint on it.” But progress didn’t happen as quickly as it sounds. “I worked hard all day and worked on the truck all night. I started to realize how long a day really is when running on only a few hours of sleep.”

Even though the Dime is now a seasoned road warrior/show truck and Matt has since moved on to working on other projects, “square one” is a not-so-distant memory. “Over the years, I’ve realized the importance of asking questions. If you don’t know what you’re doing, ask around -- it’s the best way to learn. I think what really helped me sharpen my skills is hearing people pick out flaws in my truck. It’s always pushed me to make it that much better just so I could shut their mouths.”
