Finished Interior

New Audio, New-Look Plastics, New Seats In our final look at defeating the soccer mom SUV blues, we open the four doors (and the hatch) to update and upgrade the passenger confines. Families on a budget my not have a fully-loaded SUV with goodies such as leather, navigation, or a dressed up dash, but with some smart purchases, the family hauler can quickly turn into the family limo. A family that customizes together, stays together. This story focuses on getting rid of the factory audio and adding Memphis Audio space-saving bass to the equation, along with replacing the nasty, fake wood trim in favor of Liquid Print's brushed aluminum-looking pieces. Finally, the '07 Yukon's seats were wrapped in soft leather from Roadwire for a touch of class. It's easy to turn the ho-hum mom-mobile into a fun-to-drive and still functional SUV. These easy steps will make a huge impact on your parking lot credibility.

  • 2007 GMC Yukon Buildup Rear Kick Panel
Memphis Car Audio is known for their high-quality and topnotch audio products, so once our order arrived, we couldn't get to Definitive Audio, in Phoenix, fast enough. We asked for a functional, yet good-sounding system, that didn't compromise any storage space inside our Yukon. Steve got started working on making our request a reality by building a stealth sub enclosure. He first removed the rear kick panel on the driver side.

  • 2007 GMC Yukon Buildup Wheelwell
Heavily-optioned Yukons have a factory lift gate motor here, but our Yukon did not, so Steve cut the factory insulation around the wheelwell to prep for the fiberglass enclosure. It should be noted, all Yukons have the tire jack in this location as well, and removing it will require relocating somewhere else.

  • 2007 GMC Yukon Buildup Marked Mounting Location
Steve laid out tape on the sheetmetal, then held up the Memphis SC 12-inch sub in a proper mounting location, and marked the potential box location on the tape with a Sharpie. Tape was used on the metal to make it easier to remove the fiberglass box, after making it and putting it in place.

Applying the fiberglass to the sheetmetal, Steve let it cure, and then removed it so it could be trimmed and shaped to perfectly fit the wood sidewalls.

After Steve combined the wood and fiberglass, he sealed any gaps with filler. Once the box completely cured, all the edges were smoothed.

The box got a coat of black paint before using silicone to secure it to the kick panel area. Steve also used insulating tape around the edges just to be sure there would be no rattling. The box was then stuffed with insulation and we were ready to mount the shallow-mount Memphis sub.

  • 2007 GMC Yukon Buildup Memphis Audio Subwoofer
As you can see, the Memphis SC 12-inch sub, at just 3 inches deep, is incredibly shallow and makes mounting hard-hitting bass in tight locations possible.

Steve also made a nice, factory-looking trim piece to cover the custom subwoofer enclosure. We didn't lose any storage space, but we did gain ear-pounding bass that will hopefully counter the kid's loudness.

Finally, it was time to hook up all the miles of wire that connected the sub to the new Memphis amp we mounted under the second-row seat, and then connected the amp power cable to the battery. Our factory head unit was also replaced with an Eclipse navigation head unit during the install (not shown).

Moving onto the dash plastics, we removed the woodgrain interior pieces we wanted to change by using a non-marring plastic panel tool. The new-body-style SUVs use push-in clips behind the panels and are easily pulled free and removed.
