PART THREE
Kustom Kolor
The paint scheme on the Dakota called out for a white pinstripe on the top and bottom of the copper color break. After what seemed like putting five miles of 3M masking tape on the truck it was time to paint the white line.

Here is a look at the trick paint from House of Kolor. The base paint for the striping is House of Kolor's U02 White striping enamel.

Since this was a custom job and we wanted to be a bit different, Steve mixed in a little black and a touch of red to make a nice creamy bone-white color.

The first layer of custom paint finally hit the truck. Steve pulled out his trusty Iwata HP-G spraygun to lay down the white stripe. Notice we didn't bother masking off the top of the truck as this will get shot with black and due to the low air pressure Steve is using, overspray with the white would have been minimal anyway.

The striping enamel dried in a flash and the masking tape in the center was pulled away within a couple of minutes. We got a very crisp and, most importantly, a very straight line painting with this method.

All that was left to do now for the color break was to mask off the white stripe so we could lay down some copper. Masking off a thin white line could be a bit of a challenge for most people, but Steve taped right over his white line perfectly.

Once the newly painted white stripe was protected under a layer of tape, Steve wanted to try something new. Rather than do a flat color in between the white, Steve busted out his DA with a small Scotch Brite pad and began grinding and sanding into the silver paint. Steve has done this effect many times in bare metal, but this was a first to be applied over silver paint. The effect was very cool and is sort of an organic engine-turned look.

This paint is very transparent. Kind of a metallic candy color. It has bits of copper flake in it and when paired with the grinded paint effect will look very cool and unique.

The copper stripe and tailgate were masked off to allow the final color to hit the truck. Steve applied House of Kolor's Shimrin Black basecoat using his workhorse Iwata LPH-400.

Here she is after all the paint has been sprayed on the truck. These House of Kolor paints are a two stage process meaning that a clear coat must be applied next. This is where a high gloss is achieved and the true color of paint really comes out.

PART FOUR
Stripe it!
With the bulk of the paint done, it was time to add some detail pinstriping. The first order of business was to stripe out the graphic on the tailgate. Steve only sprayed the sides of the truck with white and preferred to stripe the graphic by hand. This way the sides look perfect and doing the shorter lines on the rear by hand is a lot faster. With the skilled steady hands of a surgeon, Steve finished off the tailgate with the same House of Kolor enamel he mixed up earlier.

To finish off the truck, Steve added some nice accent lines to the side scallop. Now that the painting is all done we finished this truck's paint job with a few coats of clear.
