When it came time to alter the overall look of our project EXT, we contacted Tustin Cadillac for a bevy of Genuine Cadillac Accessories, including a paint-matched grille, chrome tow hooks, a chrome gas door, a power-sliding tonneau cover, a Bed Rug, and as an added bonus: the accessories department at Tustin Cadillac threw in a set of stainless mesh side fender vents. Tustin Cadillac was our dealer of choice for the installation of our Cadillac parts, because of their professional attitude towards customer service and knowledgeable staff. Taking about seven hours of their time, the parts went right on without any problems. A great added benefit to using the Genuine Cadillac Accessories is they are covered by the manufacturer's warranty and will not void your current Cadillac warranty.

In order to swap the grille, the front one-piece bumper and grille had to be removed. Ruben from Tustin Cadillac made quick work of it by removing the radiator core cover, the bolts on top of the grille, and the screws inside of each fender. Once the fasteners were removed Ruben was able to free the one-piece assembly.

It was now time to install the new painted grille onto the bumper. Before the new pieces were put back onto the truck, Ruben took this opportunity to install the new chrome tow hooks, part number 17800857, which retail for $115. It was just a matter of removing the stock bolts and swapping the new chrome hooks on.

As an added bonus, the accessories team at Tustin Cadillac hooked us up with a set of stainless mesh side fender vents for the EXT. Ruben is an expert at removing these vents. His method may not be in the owner's manual, but it sure worked like a champ. First off, he used dental floss to remove the double-sided tape on the edges of the vents.

Here are the mesh fender vents, which are available at Tustin Cadillac. A cool trick about these vents is the black backing that prevents you from seeing through the vent into the fender. Many of the aftermarket fender vents are hollow and look cheap. These vents retail for $195.

Ruben simply unscrewed the allen-head bolts, then drilled out the rivets to remove the factory door. The new chrome fuel door was installed by tightening the supplied hardware.

Out back, we focused on a new power tonneau cover, but first we had to remove the three hard panels that came factory on the EXT. An air ratchet was used to remove the bolts holding the rail fastening system.

With the new power tonneau cover, part number 19165024, which retails for $1,399, set on the ground, the Tustin Cadillac team began assembling the all-weather vinyl top to the side rails. The unit uses a cable system to retract the top and several aluminum bows to provide rigidity when the tonneau is in its closed position.

Here's something cool that we didn't know had existed: the EXT has an all-weather grommet around a hole in the bed floor for running wires through it. This made running the power and ground wires a breeze.

After the rails were in place, the new power tonneau was lifted into place.
Ruben crawled inside to secure the tonneau to the rail system.
It was now a matter of time to wire the tonneau cover. The original wiring diagram was wrong, but after some quick troubleshooting, the proper relay was chosen for the cover.

We finished things off by installing a Bed Rug, part number 17800590, which costs $399, in the bed of the Cadillac. 3M double-sided tape and a heavy-duty loop and latch system were used to secure the rug to the bed floor and walls.

The motor is very quiet and closes quickly.
There you have it, a power tonneau that makes access to the bed as simple as pressing a button. The soft vinyl, however, is susceptible to theft and limits the functionality of the midgate because of the large cross bar that mounts the motor and light. We also found out the hard way that it is not 100-percent water-tight. If you plan on using the midgate often and you remove the back window to accommodate large objects, this modification will require a compromise. For easy access, it is hard to beat, though.
