Paint and Body Tech - Airbrushing With Attitude
He then remasked the yellow graphic to avoid overspray and proceeded to uncover the area that would be sprayed the charcoal graphic. After applying the RM WA806K Silver Steel Gray as a base, Jeff created a beveled-edge look by highlighting the Silver with BC171 Medium Aluminum. For the shadowing, he mixed the Steel Gray with BC201 Deep Black and placed masking tape 1/4-inch from the inside border of the charcoal graphic and airbrushed the shades to give it a 3D look.
Here, you can see just how much taping, re-taping, and masking goes on to get a truck to look this good with several different colors. With the silver sprayed, all of the graphics were taped to reveal the areas that would soon become candy apple red.
Jeff was now ready to apply the RM Carizzma CZZ-307 green-gold base. This base served as the canvas for Jeff to go freestyle with his pencil where he sketched all kinds of creatures of ill will, including demons, skulls, clowns, and the like. This was where things got real creative and time consuming.
This skull shows you some of Jeff's talent as an airbrush artist. Each sketch-out graphic was covered in an over-reduced mixture of BC201 Deep Black, because candy over black is black. This gave the artwork a reflective quality.
Jeff sprayed each graphic with as much detail as possible to achieve a look of realism.
Once the basic graphic was applied, shadowing and highlights were added to give the truck an even more sinister look.
Here, you can see the above-mentioned taping and masking process with the graphics applied right over the tape to give the graphics true edges.
Twisted demons surround the truck. This one below the gas door was not an exception.
Using ideas from Dave, himself; Jeff airbrushed Dave's SWAT logo onto the side of the bed.
When you're a talented artist, showing a skull morphing from head-on to a profile is no problem.
This gives you a glimpse of the basic artwork on the bed before shadowing and highlighting were performed.
