Last issue we showed you the prep work involved in a full color change at Maaco of Anaheim. Besides the typical collision repair that Maaco's known for, they are also a full-service auto body shop, so we gave them a call when we had a few extra requests for our Nissan Frontier project. It may surprise you to see a custom truck being painted by the collision experts at Maaco, but no one paints more cars and trucks in America than Maaco and with a nationwide warranty, it's no wonder why. Check out the finale and see what can be accomplished in about a week's time. If this doesn't inspire you to revamp your ride, we don't know what will.

Here's the paint plan we have in store for the Frontier, Maaco's Signature basecoat/clearcoat urethane.

After the manager of Maaco...

After the manager of Maaco of Anaheim, Ed Perez, inspected the vehicle and marked all of the dents and repairs, Andres used a 36-grit grinding wheel to remove the paint surrounding each dent. With metal exposed he was able to weld studs to the low spots.

When metal dents it forms...

When metal dents it forms ripples, like the surface of a pool of water. To restore the shape of the panel, Andres pulled out on the low spots while tapping in on the high spots.

Andres then used a sander...

Andres then used a sander with 80-grit paper to featheredge the paint leading to the dent before applying a skim coat of plastic filler. Then he mixed up a small batch of Rage filler and applied it to the panel.

After sanding the 1st layer...

After sanding the 1st layer of filler with a block and 80-grit, Andres used the pick end of his hammer to tap down any high spots that remained and applied another skim coat of filler.
