It's hard not to notice how many vehicles on the road today are turning to diesel fuels for power. We already know diesel engine propulsion systems are used largely overseas, but here in the U.S. they have been slow to climb in popularity. Now that our population is embracing the mostly turbo-inspired motors, we can dive right in the pool of power for them. We wanted to show our readers and owners of diesel trucks a couple of recently introduced items to give you an interpretation of what items can be found in the vast seas of diesel horsepower. Each of the manufacturers listed has plenty more to offer than we could print for this story, so be sure to check out the websites to see what other hot items are available to make you drool for more.
1. AFE '99-'03 Ford 7.3L Power Stroke Exhaust
To complement its 7.3L Power Stroke intake, aFe is now producing an aluminized and stainless steel, turbo-back exhaust system. The new 4-inch mandrel-bent exhaust will improve your truck's airflow, allowing for quicker spool-up of the turbo and lower exhaust temperatures. Those benefits are especially beneficial when running a performance module. Both systems are supplied with an 8-inch-diameter, straight-through muffler and adjustable clamps. Contact aFe, Dept. TR., 191 Granite St., Corona, CA 92879, (806) 503-9911, www.afefilters.com.
2. ATS 5.9L Cummins Twin Turbo
Designed for heavy towing and performance, the ATS Aurora twin turbo will make your 5.9L Cummins come alive. Each turbo complements the performance of the other and allows quick spool-up with extended tip compressors that generate high airflow without high-mileage fatigue. Combined with a properly flowing air intake and exhaust, ATS Aurora twins will deliver massive power with low EGTs. Contact ATS, Dept. TR, 5293 Ward Rd., Unit 11, Arvada, CO 80002, (800) 949-6002, www.atsdiesel.com.
3. Banks Monster Exhaust for Dodge Mega Cab Cummins Trucks
The Banks Monster exhaust is now available for the newly designed 2006 Cummins-equipped Mega Cab. The bolt-on 4-inch after-cat exhaust system features a free-flowing, straight-through polished stainless muffler that outflows the stock muffler by 74 percent. Available in both single and duals, all kits are mandrel-bent and include stainless rolled-edge tips. Contact Banks, Dept. TR, 546 Duggan Ave., Azusa, CA 91702, (800) 601-8072, www.bankspower.com.
4. BD Power 5.9L Cummins Super "B" Twin Turbo
BD's twin turbo kit for the Dodge 5.9L Cummins can develop up to 700 rear-wheel horsepower while remaining durable enough for the street and towing. BD's kit features a pair of AirWerks S300 turbochargers equipped with extended tip compressor wheels to keep airflow high and EGTs low. The kit's high-pressure turbo provides low-rpm response, which gets compounded by the low-pressure turbo for a broad power curve. Contact BD Power, Dept. TR, Unit A10-33733 King Rd., Abbotsford, BC, Canada V2S 7M9, (800) 887-5030, www.bd-power.com.
5. Blown Away 7.3L Power Stroke Headers
Blown Away Enterprises is now offering 1999-2003 Ford Power Stroke headers. Made from 304 stainless steel tubing with 5/8-inch thick flanges, they are a direct replacement for the inefficient stock cast-iron manifolds. These headers decrease turbo response time and lower EGTs. Available polished or coated in PolyDyn's HS Gold. Contact Blown Away, Dept. TR, 3719 Terry St., Houston, TX 77009, (713) 225-0707.
