Fast Meter - Check Your A/F Ratio Fast!
On the Dynojet screen, we were showing out of the tailpipe 15.0 to 1 at idle, with both banks mixed together. Now, you could tune with that number alone and get close, but with the FAST system monitoring both sides of the engine, you can see that we'll be able to get darn-near spot-on perfect.
Richard set up his laptop and FAST meter so they were both easily viewable from his perch in the driver seat. HP Tuners was the tuning software of choice for this application.
Right out of the gate, this warning appeared and should be heeded as gospel truth. It read: "Tampering with emissions control devices can be illegal. Please check your local laws, as well as EPA rules and regulations for legal modification. Disabling emissions controls should be used on off-road only use vehicles. It is illegal to modify diagnostic test results in order to pass emissions testing. For off-road use only!"
Richard began with the transmission adjustments and mixed the numbers to suit our truck's needs, according to the tire size, gear ratio in the rear axle, and vehicle speeds. Due to the additional mileage this truck had on it, Richard was careful not to max any values, but he did do something pretty trick. Richard adjusted our truck's transmission to work solid under standard conditions, and should we press the Tow/Haul button, the transmission will be even crisper and firmer allowing us to really maximize shift performance when driving under full-throttle conditions.
Pull after pull on the dyno led Richard closer to perfect for us and our needs for the most horsepower we could extract from 87-octane fuel.
Unless you have been properly trained in this arena, this is a rodeo you shouldn't attempt to tame. Here, we can see the timing values being altered to correspond with engine rpm, as well as many other parameters that could be the death of your engine with just a tap on the keyboard in the wrong direction.
It takes professionals like Richard to view this screen and know what to do next. In the HP Tuners program, you have access to so many parameters in your vehicle's computer, it's scary. Do not play here. You have been warned.
Well, it's probably safe to bet that you are wondering whether we made anything good happen or not. The answer to that question is a resounding, yes! With Richard's abilities, we turned the Dynojet rollers to the tune of 251.77 hp and 264.81 lb-ft of torque. Keep in mind, those are peak numbers and on 87-octane, no less.
