SSBC Disc Brakes Upgrade - 1967- 1972 Chevy Trucks
Chris took over from here and slipped the bracket into a vise. The crew at IF loves to cut and grind, and after a few minutes with a disc grinder the bracket was trimmed to clear the spindle.
Using the supplied hardware, the bracket was installed, and the spindle nut tightened, with the cotter pin securing the assembly and the dust cap keeping things covered.
It was now time to install the calipers. The A126-34 kit includes awesome 4-piston calipers that we had SSBC powdercoat silver for us.
Installing the pads was as easy as sliding the pins through the holes in the pads and securing them with the supplied hairpins and retaining clip.
Included in the SSBC kit are caliper mounting shims. As you can see here, the clearance on the outboard side was too great, and the inboard side too small.
Two shims later and the clearance was ideal on each side.
Taking a look at the other SSBC hardware included in the kit, you can see why the '67-'70 Chevy kit truly is an all-in-one package.
Cary fabbed up the booster mounting on the totally smoothed firewall by drilling holes for the brake pedal and a hole for the booster rod.
Bolting right up, the supplied SSBC booster and master cylinder ensures proper pedal feel and enough PSI to get the fluid to the calipers.
After installing the included brake lines, the kit was coming together effortlessly.
George added the stainless braided caliper hoses and ran the hose to the new SSBC lines.
Cary finished things up by installing the outer tie-rod ends to the spindles along with the trick all-steel hex adjusting rods for the steering.
Not bad for a nearly 40-year-old truck, right?
Everyone at IF Custom breathed a breath of relief after seeing all-new parts on the front end of Matt's truck. Now it was time to move to the rear. Check out Issue 9 when we tackle the drum swap.
