Number Crunch
$1.4 billion: Chrysler Group's operating loss in 2006, contrasting with its net profit in 2005. Conversely, its sibling Mercedes-Benz Car group achieved an operating profit of about $3 billion in 2006, an improvement over its $666 million loss in 2005. Some investors never were comfortable with the Chrysler and Daimler-Benz partnership. Numbers like these only aggravated them more by evoking the image of the snake eating its own tail and it has motivated many to encourage the break up of the company.
$2 billion: GM's net loss in 2006, much better than its losses of $8.4 billion in 2005.
$6 billion: Chrysler's possible market value, as determined by the Goldman-Sachs Group, should the automaker be spun off from Daimler-Chrysler and sold to a potential private equity firm.
