Volkswagen was founded in 1937 by the German Auto Association. Ferdinand Porsche, who later founded Porsche, was approached by German Chancellor Adolph Hitler to create a car for the masses. Porsche was successful, creating the 938 Kdf-Wagen or the VW Kafer. ("Kafer" is the German word for Beetle.)
KdF-Stadt, where the car was built, was taken control by the British after World War II. Ivan Hirst, a British officer, revitalized the factory and the surrounding area, renaming the car to Volkswagen.
The company entered the U.S. automobile market in 1949. The cars were first called "Victory Wagons" but officially sold as the Type 1. It would not officially receive its now-familiar moniker until 1998.
The acquisition of Audi in 1964 paved the way for Volkswagen to create its now familiar Polo, Golf, and Passat automobiles. Other vehicles, such as the Rabbit, Jetta, and GTI, would be based on these models.
In 1998, Volkswagen brought back Type 1 as the New Beetle. Later, the company tried to go upmarket with the production of the Volkswagen Phaeton, a luxury sedan built to go head to head against BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Low sales had the Phaeton pulled from the U.S. market though Volkswagen recently has hinted it will bring it back.
Volkswagen, bowing to public pressure, introduced its first SUV, the Touareg, in 2003. It recently unveiled the latest version, the Touareg 2, at the New York Auto Show.
