No more holding out; Ford has now officially announced that the company will start using the same SAE J2807 engineering standard as the majority of the industry in rating the 2015 F-450’s towing capacity. With its certified tow rating remaining at 31,200 pounds, the 2015 Ford F-450 now boasts the highest tow rating of any pickup in the U.S., a full 2,200-pounds greater than its nearest crew-cab 4x4 pickup (the only configuration the F-450 is available in) competitor.

On the F-450, Ford teams the 440hp and 860lb-ft of torque second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel V-8 with a more-capable F-350 frame, upgraded suspension, and a 19.5-inch wheel and tire package.

According to Ford, a founding member of J2807, the SAE J2807 standard required Ford to load the F-450 with 400 more pounds than the company’s internal tests, simulating two passengers instead of one, and use base curb weight instead of minimum curb weight (no more curb weight games). This allowed Ford to increase the F-450’s already best-in-class GCWR from 40,000 pounds to an incredible 40,400 pounds, while maximum payload drops from 5,450 to 5,300 pounds.

Going forward, Ford is migrating all vehicles to the J2807 standard as all-new versions of the company’s various products are introduced. This change will align Ford’s payload practices with those of other manufacturers to level out the playing field for stating capabilities, making it easier for consumers looking to compare competing trucks.

While Ford does consider the F-450 a Class 3 truck, there has been some noise from other manufacturers that consider it a Class 4 truck. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out in the marketplace.
